The Foundation Playbook
Most golfers practice for years without seeing results. Not because they lack talent — because they lack a system. These seven drills are the foundation of the Deliberately Better Golf method. They target the areas where most shots are actually lost on the course.
Set two tees 1 inch wider than your putter head, 3 feet from the hole. Make 20 consecutive putts through the gate without touching either tee. This single drill transforms your stroke path inside two weeks.
Low-handicappers make 70%+ from 6 feet. Place 6 balls in a circle at 6 feet and hole them all. Track your success rate weekly. The most important putting distance in golf — and the most neglected in practice.
Place 5 balls at 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 feet. Hole all 20 in a row before you stop. If you miss, restart from zero. Builds pressure tolerance and the habit of seeing the ball go in the hole — the most powerful confidence drill in the system.
Chip from the fringe until the ball stops within 3 feet of the hole — then hole the putt. Practice the complete up-and-down sequence, not just the chip in isolation. Tracks and builds your scrambling percentage like a tour player.
Place a chalk circle (or 4 tees) 4 feet around the hole. Hit 10 chips from the fringe and count how many land inside. Success target: 7 of 10. This drill eliminates the big chips that lead to 3-putts.
Place a towel at 30, 40, and 50 yards. Hit 3 balls to each target. Count how many land within 3 feet of the towel. Distance control from 30–50 yards is where most bogeys are born — and where practice time pays the biggest dividend.
Stand behind the ball, pick a specific target, take one practice swing, address, commit fully, hit. Every shot in practice. A 15–20 second routine is the single most powerful mental skill in golf. Tour players use this on every shot — so should you.
After the Playbook
Use the 7 drills across 3 sessions. Focus on the Gate Drill and Twenty Makes daily if possible. Get used to the habit of deliberate, targeted practice.
Write down your putting % and up-and-down % after each session. Even a note on your phone works. Numbers create awareness, awareness creates improvement.
By week 3 you'll see measurable improvement in your drill metrics. By week 4, fewer 3-putts and more up-and-downs on the course. Your scores will start to reflect your practice.
