Golf Course Management for Mid-Handicappers

Smart decisions on every shot. The strategy that low-handicappers use to manage course conditions and save strokes.

Scoring better isn't always about technique. It's about smart decisions.

The Course Management Principle

A mid-handicapper with poor technique but excellent course management beats a great golfer with poor strategy.

Why? Because course management converts 90-shot rounds into 85-shot rounds without changing your swing.

The Five Course Management Rules

Rule 1: Know Your Distances

  • Your carry distance for each club (not total distance)
  • How you perform in pressure situations
  • How conditions affect your yardages

Rule 2: Play Conservatively Off the Tee

  • Aim for the middle of the fairway, not the edge
  • Use a club you can control, not your farthest club
  • Avoid trouble (water, out-of-bounds)

Rule 3: Leave Yourself Good Angles

  • Position your second shot so you have an easy approach
  • Avoid the most dangerous spots on the green
  • Leave yourself below the hole on downhill putts

Rule 4: Avoid Double Bogies

  • After a bad shot, take your medicine (lay up if needed)
  • Don't try to hit the perfect shot when you're already in trouble
  • One bad shot is a bogey. Two bad decisions make a double.

Rule 5: Play The Course, Not Your Opponent

  • Stick to your strategy regardless of what others shoot
  • Make decisions based on conditions, not pressure
  • Consistency beats heroics

Real Course Management Examples

Par 4 with Water Left

Safe play: Aim right, take 7-iron off the tee, lay up short of water, pitch on, 2-putt for bogey.

vs. Hero play: Try to carry water with driver, miss, water hazard, double bogey.

Downhill Par 3

Smart play: Aim for the back of the green (leave yourself uphill putt), 2-putt, par.

vs. Aggressive play: Go for the back pin, miss, roll off, chip back, 3-putt, bogey.

Impact of Course Management

Implement these 5 rules, and you eliminate 2-3 unnecessary strokes per round.

That's the difference between 90 and 87.
