The 80/20 Rule in Golf: Why Most Practice Gets It Wrong

80% of scoring comes from 20% of golf. Most golfers practice the wrong 80%.

The 80/20 principle applies to golf. But most golfers don't know what the 20% actually is.

The 20% That Matters

In golf scoring, 80% of your strokes come from these areas:

  • Putting: 40% of strokes (approximately 36 putts per round)
  • Short game (chipping/pitching/bunkers): 20% of strokes
  • Course management: 20% of improvement

The other 20% of strokes come from full swing (driving and iron play).

What Most Golfers Practice

Time allocation for 90-shooters:

  • Driving range: 60% (full swing)
  • Putting green: 25%
  • Short game: 10%
  • Course management: 5%

They're spending 60% of time on the 20% that matters.

The Math of 80/20

Improving your full swing by 10% saves 2 strokes per round.

Improving your short game by 30% saves 6 strokes per round.

Which would you choose?

The 20% Practice Plan

For a 90-shooter breaking 80:

  • 50%: Putting (distance control, 6-foot makes, pressure)
  • 30%: Short game (chipping, pitching, bunkers)
  • 15%: Course management (decision-making, strategy)
  • 5%: Full swing (maintenance, specific issue fix)

This is how tour players practice. This is how 80-shooters are made.

Stop Wasting Time

If you're a 90-shooter spending most of your time at the driving range working on your driver swing, you're doing it wrong.

Your driver is fine.

Your short game isn't.

The path to breaking 90: Practice the 20% that matters. Stop wasting time on the 80% that doesn't.
