How to Break 90 in Golf: The Practice Plan

The exact 12-week system that takes 90-shooters to consistent 80s

Breaking 90 feels impossible until you understand what actually needs to change.

Most golfers think they need to hit the ball better. Longer drives. More accurate irons. Perfect swing mechanics.

That's wrong.

The real truth: You break 90 by improving three metrics: putting, short game, and course management. Your full swing is probably already good enough.

This guide shows you the exact 12-week plan to break 90 using the same methodology tour players use.

The 90-Shooter Profile

Here's what a typical 90-shooter looks like:

Metric 90-Shooter 80-Shooter Difference
Driving distance 220 yards 225 yards 5 yards
Fairways hit 60% 65% +5%
Greens in Regulation 55% 70% +15%
Putting average 34-35 putts 31-32 putts 2-3 putts
Up-and-down % 35% 65% +30%

The gap isn't distance. It's consistency and short game execution.

Your driving is fine. Your iron play is fine. What's costing you 10 strokes is:

  1. Missing greens and not getting up-and-down (costing 4-5 strokes)
  2. Missing putts from 6-10 feet (costing 3-4 strokes)
  3. Poor course management decisions (costing 2-3 strokes)

This plan focuses on those three things.

  • ✓ Control distance on lag putts
  • ✓ Get up-and-down 50% from missed greens
  • ✓ Feel your short game improving
  • ✓ Notice lower putts per round on the course

If not, repeat weeks 1-4. Consistency before progression.

Score consistently in the 85-87 range. Add pressure and increase difficulty.

Level 2 Targets

Putting Goals

  • Gate Drill: 75% success at 30 feet

Level 2 Mental Development

This is where mental game starts mattering.

Pre-Shot Routine (15-25 seconds)

  1. Stand behind ball, pick target
  2. Take 2-3 practice swings/strokes
  3. Address the ball
  4. Final look at target
  5. Commit and execute

Practice this routine on every shot, every practice session. By week 8, it should be automatic.

The Three Non-Negotiables

If you follow this plan and still don't break 90, you're missing one of these:

1. Consistency

You can't skip weeks. 3-4 sessions per week, every week, for 12 weeks.

2. Tracking

You must measure your metrics weekly. Without data, you can't adjust.

3. Pressure

You must practice with stakes. Keep score. Make each drill count.

What About the Full Swing?

Notice this plan doesn't focus on driver swing mechanics or iron technique.

That's intentional.

Most 90-shooters already have a decent full swing. What they lack is short game consistency and course management discipline. Improving the full swing 5% won't help. Improving short game 30% will save you 10 strokes.

If your full swing is a weakness:

  • Get one lesson from a PGA pro
  • Identify one specific fix (tempo, grip, alignment)
  • Practice 10 minutes per session on that
  • Don't chase perfect technique—chase consistency

But the 80% of your improvement comes from putting and short game.
